RMT backs public meeting with Olympic legend and equal rights activist John Carlos from the 1968 games
May 18 2012: RMT ACTIVISTS from London Underground are proud to have initiated a public meeting “Resistance – the Best Olympic Spirit” with one of the two athletes who featured in arguably the most iconic image from the modern history of the games, John Carlos who raised a gloved fist along with his comrade Tommie Smith on the podium in Mexico in 1968.

Rail unions and trades councils are holding public meetings and a day of action at the end of May opposing the Government’s proposed cuts to jobs and services in the rail industry.
There will be 13 joint meetings with trades councils held on Thursday 24 & 31 May. The meetings will be addressed by speakers from the rail unions, trades councils and local MP’s. Updated details of the meetings can be found here.
On Monday 28 May there will be a joint TUC/Rail union day of action with postcards distributed to passengers at key railway stations.

The decision to award the £3bn Thameslink trains contract to Siemens of Germany threatens to slaughter jobs at Bombardier in Derby and First Capital Connect fleet-maintenance depots, with devastating consequences for the future of train manufacturing in the UK.

In December the European Parliament's Transport Committee is going to vote on the Recast of the 1st Railway Package.
The Recast 1st Railway Package aims to permanently separate wheel from steel and moves beyond simple separation of accounts. It is designed to pave the way for the 4th Rail Package on liberalising domestic passenger services and further privatisation of the railways in Europe. This means that there would be an even stronger body of EU legislation preventing the renationalisation of Britain's railway.
