Suffolk derailment underlines guard’s ‘crucial’ role, says RMT

THE CRUCIAL role played by the conductor of a train derailed in a level-crossing collision on the Marks Tey-Sudbury line in Suffolk last week has underlined the importance of safety-trained guards, Britain’s biggest rail union says today.

Rail union RMT warned today that tests using a Deutsche Bahn ICE (Inter City Express) train in the Channel Tunnel in October this year could open the door for other European operators to serve the UK and bring in a major dilution of current safety standards.

TUBE UNION RMT today demanded a full external investigation into an escalator fire at Euston station four weeks ago where smoke detection systems failed and the station was only safely evacuated through the experience and vigilance of station-based staff. RMT have this morning referred the matter to the safety regulator the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR).

RMT writes to Transport Secretary and safety organisations demanding urgent action on railways following Potters Bar inquest

RAIL UNION RMT has today written to Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond, the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) and the Health and Safety Executive demanding assurances that urgent action is being taken on rail safety following notice from the Judge at the Potters Bar Inquest that there is a continuing risk of fatalities eight years on from the disaster.
