ACAS TALKS BREAK DOWN

Our Ref: BR2/0146

15th August 2016

TO ALL GTR SOUTHERN CONDUCTORS AND CONDUCTOR INSTRUCTORS

Dear Colleague,

ACAS TALKS BREAK DOWN

ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTHERN GTR

As you will be aware, your negotiating team have been engaged in talks with GTR under the auspices of ACAS to try to resolve this dispute. Regrettably these talks have today broken down despite the reasonable proposal we tabled which would ensure a second person on train to deliver safety, customer service and access.

Our  reasonable and practical proposal, which would have set the ground for resolving all aspects of the dispute without dilution of safety standards, would have addressed the needs of the business, and ensured that disabled, elderly and other groups could rely on a member of staff being on board to assist and facilitate their travel.  GTR made it clear that they did not want to ensure the presence of the second person on board.

We were hopeful that these talks could make progress on the basis of our proposals but Management simply refuse to engage on the fundamental issues in dispute. Consequently the National Executive Committee will be meeting this afternoon to consider our response to this unfortunate new development.

I will keep members informed of developments.

Yours sincerely
