PROPOSED INTRODUCTION OF STATION HOSTS – GOVIA THAMESLINK RAILWAY

Our Ref: BR2/2/2

25th August 2016

Dear Colleague,

PROPOSED INTRODUCTION OF STATION HOSTS – GOVIA THAMESLINK RAILWAY

I write further to my letter dated 16th August 2016, in which I advised you of the recent ballot result with regards to the above matter. As you are aware GTR want to close ticket offices, or cut them to morning peak only at 83 stations across the network. The company have proposed to introduce a new multi-functional station host role which would cover Sales, Gateline and Revenue Control responsibilities. Additionally, this role would be required to sell a vast range of tickets, assist passengers with ticket machines, ensure the Gateline runs smoothly and will be responsible for carrying out more station cleaning and security duties. You and your colleagues would be tasked with carrying out lone working with the responsibility of carrying ticket machines and large sums of cash for all hours of your shift. This would not only be exhausting but would place you and your colleagues in a vulnerable and susceptible position to crimes such as theft and assault.

Our Lead Officer and company council representatives met with the company and raised these issues with GTR. However, despite our concerns for the safety of you and your colleagues the company insisted on pressing ahead with the closing of ticket offices and introducing the new role. Therefore, we cannot allow the company to blatantly ignore the wellbeing and safety of you and your colleagues. This obvious disregard for not only our concerns but passenger welfare cannot and will not be tolerated.

Our National Executive Committee has recently considered this matter and has instructed you and your colleagues to not book on for any turns of duty that commence between the hours of:-

•     0001 hours and 2359 hours on Wednesday 7th September 2016.

We must send a clear message to the company that enough is enough and that we will not be bullied into taking dangerous and increase workloads without our concerns being addressed. It is vital that we stand together and demonstrate our strength of feeling to the company in this dispute.

UNITY IS STRENGTH
STAND STRONG

Yours sincerely
