ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

To All SWR Guards, Commercial Guards and Train Drivers

HERE WE GO AGAIN – MANAGEMENT MISINFORMATION (LIES!)

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Yes it’s that time again when management put all their effort into trying to get you to vote against your union in the forthcoming ballot rather than negotiate a settlement that will put this dispute to bed.

I know that they have been visiting depots in the lead up to our ballot peddling misinformation and trying to convince members to vote no. It is the same as last time, basically trying to bully and intimidate with their presence.

You and your colleagues have given them a firm answer in the last two ballots and I ask you to do the same again. We have said from day one that all we are asking for is for them to honour the agreement they inherited when it was South West Trains – a safety critical Guard on all services. SWT could do it and still make a profit so why can't they.

The anti-trade union legislation makes it very difficult for you and your colleagues and your union to continue the fight without veering away from our main challenge of reaching agreement. Our efforts have to be split into negotiations and balloting. Management use the re-ballot as a way of stalling negotiations in the hope that we do not meet the stringent and unfair thresholds. They know you will vote ‘yes’ they just hope not in enough numbers – what a way to negotiate.

We have kept you advised of developments all along. We promise to continue to do so. Do not let time defeat us. This may be the third ballot but the issues remain the same and we ask that you continue the magnificent support, truly magnificent, that you have shown over the past year. The support you have shown has forced movement from management and we need to continue to exert this pressure by voting ‘yes’ in the forthcoming ballot.

The bottom line is this – do not listen to the misinformation and lies of management, do not be bullied or intimidated and most importantly of all, use your vote and vote ‘yes’.

The ballot papers will be despatched to your home address today by the ERS. If you or a colleague hasn’t receive one by Wednesday 29th August please phone the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 or the Switchboard on 020 7387 4771 and ask for the Industrial Relations Department and a duplicate will be sent.

Yours sincerely,
