Dear Colleague,

Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – Southern (GTR)

As you are aware the RMT today entered into talks with Charles Horton from Southern Rail with your union entering into this discussion in good faith and with the sole aim of finding a way to end this dispute and trying to reach an agreement.

You are probably already aware that Charles Horton gave assurances in an interview with the media in which he stated that he could ‘absolutely’ guarantee a second member of staff on all current Southern service with a conductor on board. This was welcome news and seemed to provide an opportunity to end this dispute. On this basis, your union called for discussions to take place. The union have stated repeatedly, that this dispute isn’t about who opens and closes the doors, it is about that absolute guarantee of a second safety-competent member of staff on these Southern services.

Unfortunately, I am angry and frustrated to announce that despite this golden opportunity to resolve this dispute, it has now been wrecked personally by Mr Horton who has reneged on commitments that he has given through the media. Passengers will rightly share your anger that this company persistently moves the goal posts and blocks any form of a resolution being found. The programme of industrial action goes ahead with the union remaining committed to genuine and meaningful talks.

I once again congratulate you and your colleagues for your continued support and dedication in standing firm and united against this company.

Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
