ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

TO ALL SWR COMMERCIAL GUARDS, GUARDS AND DRIVERS

Dear Colleague,

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE?
RE-BALLOT CLOSES ON THURSDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2018

ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Firstly, I would like to thank and congratulate you all for your incredible support for your union throughout this dispute. Unfortunately the company remain intransigent and despite our best efforts they continue to refuse to provide an acceptable resolution to this dispute. As advised last week your union negotiating team entered into talks with an open mind and the aim to resolve this dispute. However, the company have done everything possible to stop talks from progressing and are still failing to guarantee a Second Safety Critical person on every train.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and believes that there is no other option than to call more industrial action. The NEC believes that our union has given the company more than enough opportunities to resolve this dispute. Therefore, you and your colleagues are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 0001 Hours on Friday 31st August 2018 and 2359 Hours on Saturday 1st September 2018
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Sunday 2nd September 2018
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Saturday 8th September 2018
• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Saturday 15th September 2018

(Please note that the 48 Hour action called on Friday 31st August 2018 has been extended by an additional 24 hours and will now run for 72 Hours).

In addition, due to the Trade Union Act 2016 there are now even greater restrictions on workers taking industrial action. These appalling balloting laws are some of the most restrictive and draconian in Europe. One result of these rules is that all ballots are only valid for 6 months from the date they close. We therefore
need to ballot you all again to keep up our principled fight to defend the role of the guard and against the spread of DOO.

Ballot papers were therefore sent out last Thursday to your home addresses and should be arriving any time now. Your union is asking you to return a magnificent ‘YES’ vote as you did in the previous two ballots. The ballot will close on Thursday 6th September 2018.

If you or any of your colleagues has not received your ballot papers by Thursday 30th August 2018 please contact the National Helpline on 0800 376 3706 or the Industrial Relations Department via the switchboard on 0207 387 4771 and a replacement will be sent out immediately.

SUPPORT THE ACTION!
USE YOUR VOTE!
UNITY IS STRENGTH!

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
