As part of the official commemorative events in Dover, maritime union RMT today paid respect to the memories of the 193 crew and passengers who lost their lives in the Herald of Free Enterprise on 6th March 1987.
RMT General Secretary, Mick Cash said:
"Today we remember those crew and passengers who died and offer our hear felt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this terrible tragedy. We also continue to extend our sympathy and support to the survivors of this disaster.
"In doing so, we re-state the RMT's commitment to working with government and industry to maintain high and consistent maritime safety standards for seafarers and passengers."
Notes to editors
1. RMT was formed in 1990 by the merger of the National Union of Seamen (NUS) and the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR).
2. NUS members were amongst the crew members who lost their lives on the Herald of Free Enterprise.
3. RMT is the trade union for seafarer ratings. Ratings are maritime specialists who work to support officers in operating and servicing merchant vessels, including ro-ro passenger ferries.
