RMT Press Office:
RMT responds to demand from right wing Institute of Economic Affairs that Network Rail be privatised.
General Secretary Mick Cash said
“This is dangerous right wing nonsense that threatens to drag Britain’s railways back to the lethal days of the privatised Railtrack infra-structure operation which had to be scrapped after the disasters at Hatfield and Potters Bar and a string of other fundamental failures.
“Yes, there is a proliferation of fragmented private companies bleeding our railways dry but the idea that the answer is more privatisation could only come from a bunch of ideological head-bangers. The solution is public control and public ownership of the entire rail network and that is what RMT will continue to fight for.”
