RMT on new research showing chronic shortage of drivers as private train companies look to milk franchises.
General Secretary Mick Cash said;
"The chronic shortage of drivers exposed today is no surprise to RMT as this is just further evidence of the greedy private train companies looking to hack back the head count by any means possible to pump up their profits.
"Let us also not forget that these same companies are looking to sack guards, close ticket offices and axe station and platform staff in their relentless drive to line their own pockets at the expense of jobs, services and safety.
"It is a scandal that services are routinely cancelled due to the excuse of staff shortage when the reality is that this is all part of a deliberate policy of slashing costs to inflate profits on Britain's rip-off private railways. "
