Dear Colleague
ARRIVA RAIL LONDON – “PROTECT THE RAILWAY PROVIDERS” PROJECT
I have received a communication regarding the above project from Arriva Rail London.
It is clear that this project has shared aims with the RMT:
- Our members should be able to work in a violence free environment.
- Railway staff play a vital role in keeping the transport system running smoothly and safely for everyone
- They should be able to go to work without fear of violence, just like any other worker
- No one should face threats, abuse, or physical harm while simply doing their job
- Violence against railway staff not only puts their safety at risk but also disrupts services, endangers passengers, and creates a hostile environment for everyone
- Respect and support for transport workers helps ensure a safer and more efficient railway system for all
- Everyone deserves to work in a safe environment, and we must all do our best make sure our railway staff can do their jobs without fear.
At its meeting on 11th February 2025, your National Executive Committee noted and adopted the following report from its health and safety subcommittee:
We note the correspondence on file from Arriva Rail London (ARL).
The General Secretary is instructed to contact ARL offering our support for this proposal.
The General Secretary is further instructed to raise the matter of an MP making the proposal for legislation to better protect railway staff by issuing criminal bans to persons who assault our members and passengers as an early day motion with our parliamentary group.
Branches and regional councils to be informed.
I am acting in line with these instructions.
Please bring this circular to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
