Dear Colleague,
AVANTI WEST COAST – BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET – ASSAULT ON GATELINE RMT MEMBER
I received a report of an RMT member being the victim of a violent assault whilst staffing the gate line at Birmingham New Street station.
For some months now our local staff reps and health and safety reps, together with RMT Regional Organisers, have been making approaches to Avanti West Coast management about the security and safety of our members staffing these gatelines.
Short staffing is another issue all too prevalent with Avanti.
Your National Executive Committee, at its meeting on 8th December 2022, resolved as follows:
We instruct the General Secretary to inform the company that we are in dispute with them over this issue.
Furthermore the General Secretary is instructed to commence a ballot for action short of strike action in the form of not undertaking lone working on barriers at Birmingham New Street.
All affected members, Branches and Regional Councils to be advised.
I am acting in accordance with these instructions. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
