Dear Colleague,

BUS FIRE – EXETER

At its meeting on 21st April, your National Executive Committee (NEC) considered a report of a busy road in Exeter being blocked due to a bus fire. According to roads traffic and monitoring service, Inrix, the road was partially blocked due to the incident, with a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service stating that it was a single decker 50 seater bus that was 70% damaged by fire.

The NEC noted and adopted the following report from its Health and Safety Sub-committee:

We note the contents of the report from RMT Regional Organiser, Barry West, relating to a recent bus fire in Devon.

In connection with this we instruct the General Secretary to write to CPT (Confederation of Passenger Transport) to ascertain what they are doing to ensure their members have suitable and sufficient measures in place to maintain fire safety standards.

We also instruct the General Secretary to raise this issue in Parliament, highlighting the use of poor-quality materials; to campaign for safer standards of manufacture and for adequate staff training, processes and for arrangements for assistance and instruction to be in place.

Branches and Regional Councils to be informed accordingly.

I am acting in accordance with these instructions.

Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
