Head Office Circular: NP/147/24

13th June 2024

To: The Secretary

All branches and Regional Councils

Dear Colleague,

CLEAN AIR DAY: SATURDAY 15th JUNE

The annual Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign, air pollution is linked to 43,000 deaths per year in the UK and The World Health Organisation recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental threat to our health.

If you/your reps want to address air quality issues in your workplace then:

  1. Read this recently published TUCAN (Trade Union Clean Air Network) guide published: “Workers Guide to action on indoor workplace air pollution”

https://greenerjobsalliance.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Workers-Guide-to-action-on-indoor-workplace-air-pollution-WEBSITE.pdf

  1. Ask if you can have the loan of Qingping Air Monitor Lite device from your Regional Office. Use the monitor to find out what levels of pollution your members are exposed to at work. The monitors are easy to use and come with brief instructions.  The monitor readings can be used by reps to challenge their employer to put in measures to address air quality issues.

  1. Read RMT web site page on Air Quality https://www.rmt.org.uk/about/health-and-safety/health/air-quality/#:~:text=All%20employers%20where%20RMT%20has,health%20impact%20of%20air%20pollution.

Please bring this circular to the attention of relevant members and representatives.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch

General Secretary
