Dear Colleague,
COLOUR VISION TESTING WITHIN THE RAIL INDUSTRY
I write further to Head Office Circular, NP/99 /24, dated 9th April 2024, to explain that at its meeting on 9th May 2024 your NEC (National Executive Committee) noted and adopted a report from its Health and safety subcommittee - from when it met to discuss correspondence received from RSSB in relation to the potential introduction of an industry-recognised secondary testing system for drivers – and RSSB explanation as to why the impact other safety critical grades was not being considered in this review process.
Your NEC noted and adopted the following:
We note the contents of the letter from RSSB. In connection with this correspondence, we agree that if RSSB TOM SC (Traffic Operation and Management Standards Committee) decide in September to consult over of an industry-recognised secondary colour vision test for drivers – for those who cannot currently pass the Ishihara test - and the RSSB committee ultimately approve publication in December, that the General Secretary is then instructed to place an update report in front of this NEC, for our decision as to future actions.
Branches and Regional Councils to be informed accordingly.
I am acting in line with these instructions. Please bring the contents of this circular and the attached document to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
