Head Office Circular NP/149/20

All Branches
All Regional Councils

Dear Colleagues

DIESEL FUMES FROM 159/158 UNITS AT WATERLOO STATION

Further to Head Office Circular: NP/32/20, 2nd March 2020 a response has been received from Network Rail concerning their actions in this case. The company report concluded that concentrations of diesel exhaust emissions in the locations that were monitored were below the relevant short term and long term exposure limits; however, RMT were not privy to the data from the sampling so cannot yet make an informed judgment on this report. This response has been considered by the National Executive Committee who have noted and adopted the following resolution of their Health and Safety Sub-committee:

We note the correspondence on file from Network Rail. We instruct the General Secretary to share the company’s response with Waterloo Branch for their comment, specifically, whether our health and safety representatives were involved in overseeing the testing arrangements and in any further discussion on this matter. General Secretary is further instructed to write to Network Rail calling on them to share the data from the sampling as we are not satisfied with their response. On receipt of the data the General Secretary is instructed to submit the data to TUCAN for comment. Further reports on this matter to be placed back in front of this National Executive Committee.

Branches and Regional Councils be advised.

I am acting in accordance with this instruction and will keep you informed of developments. Please bring the contents of this Circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Mick Lynch
