First Great Western - Toilets on Turbo Stock Trains

Dear Colleague,

FIRST GREAT WESTERN – TOILETS ON TURBO STOCK TRAINS

Reading Branch submitted a resolution highlighting the issue of running train services without working toilets on board. This seems to be especially prevalent on Turbo Stock trains. As well as being an unacceptable level of service, this also opens train crew to the risk of verbal abuse arising from passenger frustration.

The General Grades Committee considered the resolution and adopted the following report from the Health & Safety Sub-committee on 22nd February 2013:

“That we note the resolution from our Reading No.1 Branch and the sentiments contained therein.

We therefore instruct the General Secretary to write to FGW to inform then that this situation is unacceptable and demanding that the treat their passengers and staff with basic dignity and respect.

To write to all TOCs to ascertain their ‘Service Requirements’ in respect of toilet provision on trains.

Liaise with the RMT Parliamentary Group and other passenger groups to highlight this penny pinching tactic.

Obtain a legal opinion from Thompsons Solicitors regarding toilet provision under the Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Branches & Regional Councils to be advised.”

I am currently acting in accordance with the instructions and will update you accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

Bob Crow

General Secretary
