Dear Colleague

Interpretation of Risk Assessments and Environment Monitoring – Ships/Docks

A resolution from the Biennial RMT Maritime Industrial Organising Conference on the above matter was referred to the AGM. The resolution proposed the union provided resources to representatives to assist them in interpreting scientific language and terms used in risk assessments. On giving consideration to the resolution the National Executive Committee have noted and adopted the following report of their Health and Safety Sub-committee:

That we note the resolution and support the principle that risk assessments and work instructions should be provided in a clear and intelligible format. The responsibility for this is a duty of the employer and where complex issues occur explanations should be provided by experts, rather than by the union.

Where representatives are in need of further guidance they can seek assistance from our Health and Safety department.

Branches and Regional Councils be advised.

I am acting in accordance with this instruction. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
