Dear Colleague,
LACK OF BAME COVID-19 AWARENESS
I write further to Head Office Circular, reference number NP/89/21, 22nd March 2021, to let you know that your National Executive Committee (NEC) met on 18th May 2021 to consider a report received from the Regional Organiser about a recent meeting he attended with TfL to discuss RMT concerns that TfL/London Underground had not taken the issue of protecting our BAME members during the Covid pandemic seriously enough.
In connection with this the NEC adopted the following resolution:
We note the report from our lead officer and additional information that was provided to the officer by LUL at a directors’ level meeting to discuss the impact of Covid on BAME TfL workers.
It is regrettable that TfL initially refused such a meeting, but the productive nature of the meeting has justified our insistence that it take place.
In addition to the documentation on file TfL has now provided us with a breakdown of Covid deaths on TfL by ethnicity.
We note that further discussions will now take place within TfL and LUL functions and the General secretary is therefore instructed to place any updates back in front of the NEC.
LTRC and branches to be informed.
I am acting in accordance with this instruction and will keep you advised of any developments.
Please bring the contents of this Circular to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
