Dear Colleague

LONDON TRANSPORT – STAFF ASSAULTS AND WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

Your London Transport Regional Council has submitted the following resolution:

That this region notes that year on year, levels of staff assaults and abuse, customer assaults, anti-social behaviour and habitual ticketless travel consistently rise according to official figures

Violent crime against staff and sexual assault crimes against members of the public are significantly up. Despite this, staff levels are critically low, lone working and unstaffed staffed stations are now the norm and police levels and support are at crisis levels.

These matters have been strongly taken up with the company at all levels but with no real change and indeed matters are getting worse.

This regional council remits the NEC to:

1)    Request a meeting with the Mayor and the commissioner and CI BTP raising in the strongest terms the above, demanding real active action on the above, not tokenism

2)    Full publicity, press campaigns, and a demo at City Hall or Palestra on the above

3)    Consideration of all industrial tools available to the RMT up to and including industrial action.

At its meeting on 11th March 2025, your National Executive Committee noted and adopted the following report from its Health and Safety subcommittee - from when it met to consider the resolution.

We note with alarm the situation described in the resolution from London Transport Regional Council.

We instruct the General Secretary to take up the actions in line with the resolution.

Branches and Regional Councils to be advised. All relevant members to be informed via text and email.

I am acting in accordance with these instructions and will keep you advised of developments.

Yours sincerely,

Eddie Dempsey

General Secretary
