Dear Colleague

Network Rail – Vans Fire Risk

Further to Head Office Circular NP/199/16, 11th August 2016 in which I informed you of problems that had been identified in some of Network Rail’s road vehicle fleet. Some vehicles with welfare provision have auxiliary power supply provided from additional batteries which have caused vans to catch fire. We asked the company to withdraw the remaining vehicles from service until modifications had been completed.

Having written to the company on this matter we raised our concerns at the National Health, Safety and Welfare Council. Although the company continued to be resistant to our call for the vehicles to be taken out of service thanks to considerable pressure from our representatives, Network Rail have now agreed to withdraw all un-modified vehicles until they have had the necessary remedial work completed.

Your representatives are to be congratulated on their efforts in bringing this matter to a successful conclusion.

Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely
