Dear Colleague,

NETWORK RAIL - DASH CAMS

Your union has been raising members’ concerns that the current fleet of vehicles had been fitted with dash cams. Network Rail had informed the union that although fitted in vehicles the recording system had been disconnected.

Now, in a letter from the company, they have admitted that 634 vehicles across the fleet have been fitted with dash cams which were indeed recording journeys. These recordings are saved directly to a hard drive on the vehicle. This appears to have been allowed to happen due to the company’s procurement strategies. The company have now informed the union they have removed the option to add a camera to a vehicle from the ordering process. This will stop any new cameras entering service.

The company have also stated that for the 634 fitted vehicles all will have their cameras turned off and their hard drives removed locally. Any footage on the hard drive will be wiped at the time of removal. Vehicles that are currently on order and fitted with cameras will not have a hard drive inserted.

On considering this matter the NEC carried the following resolution:

That we welcome the correspondence from the company and that they have taken positive steps to resolve the issues regarding the fitting of dashboard cameras in vehicles without consultation with the trade unions.

Accordingly, we instruct the General Secretary to place any further developments back before this NEC. Relevant Branches and Regional Councils to be advised.

Please make the contents of this circular available to all appropriate members.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
