Network Rail - Thermal Cameras

Dear Colleague

NETWORK RAIL – THERMAL CAMERAS

A report from our Network Rail Representatives on the company’s proposals regarding the use of thermal cameras at some work locations has raised some concerns in this regard.

It appears that in some parts of Network Rail where this equipment is installed, it is mandatory to be tested and in other parts, it is not.
It is not clear whether there are universal guidelines of the type of equipment (approved), how it is installed, calibrated or maintained
Some members have asked what they do if they appear to test as a concern (raised temperature). Are they sent home? Do they then take a test for COVID-19? Do they self isolate?
If they have not had test results back at end of 14-day isolation period, do they return to work anyway?

On giving consideration to this report the National Exceutive Committee noted and adopted the following report of their Health and Safety Sub-committee:

We note the report on file and instruct the General Secretary to write to the company raising our representative’s concerns. We strongly believe the company should produce an information leaflet setting out the arrangements as they are to be applied. A further report to be placed back in front of this National Executive Committee.

Branches and Regional Council be advised.

I am acting in accordance with this instruction. Please bring the contents of this Circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Mick Lynch
Senior Assistant General Secretary
