Dear Colleague,
NETWORK RAIL – VEHICLE SPEED WARNING SYSTEM (VSWS)
Further to Head Office Circular NP/222/21, date 25th June 2021, correspondence was received from Network Rail’s Supply Chain Services Director as follows:
Following our meeting on the 9th December 2020 and the recent trial of the replacement In Cab Safety System (ICSS) within c200 vehicles, Network Rail would now like to commence the roll out and fitment of the system across all 9,500 vehicles.
Taking into account end user feedback, the ICSS will be fitted in full. This includes a PDA, reversing monitor, light bar and cameras.
I can confirm that the camera facility will not be activated; the activation and use of cameras will be subject to a separate consultation process and we have scheduled a consultation meeting on 10th September to continue talks on this subject. Cameras will not be activated ahead of the separate consultation.
We remain committed to our colleagues’ safety and appreciate your support in reducing the longer term driving risks.
At its meeting on 19th August, 2021, your National Executive Committee noted and adopted the following report from its Health and Safety Sub-committee:
We note the correspondence on file from Network Rail and note that the camera facility will not be activated.
The General Secretary is instructed to respond to the company on this matter, noting that RMT will engage in consultation on the activation and use of cameras.
Branches and Regional Councils to be informed.
I am acting in accordance with these instructions and will keep members advised of any developments.
Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
