Dear Colleague,

REDUCTION IN DRIVING HOURS

Your 2022 Annual General Meeting adopted the following resolution:

We at South Devon Bus ask the bus workers conference to call on the NEC to contact the bus companies that have negotiating rights with RMT to review all rosters and duties, so as to make sure no driver is sat behind the wheel for more than 4 half hours - similar to euro and coaching laws.

The reason for this is due to lack of male and female toilets in the UK. Kidney complaints are on the up due to lack of facilities.

Health and safety, mental health and amount of traffic on our roads to try and achieve less accidents and sickness.

At its meeting on 1st September 2022, your National Executive Committee noted and adopted the following report from its Health and Safety Sub-committee:

We note the resolution carried unanimously by the 2022 AGM.

The General Secretary is instructed to a write to recognised companies seeking clarity on how “driving time” is defined and maximum permitted durations before writing to the Traffic Commissioner on the question. This to be followed up with a campaign to reduce time in driving seat to 4.5 hours, including seeking Parliamentary Group support.

Relevant Branches and Regional Councils to be informed.

I am acting in line with these instructions. Please bring the contents of this circular and the attached document to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch

General Secretary
