Dear Colleague

RSSB RAIL ROAD SAFETY WEEK, 18th - 22nd NOVEMBER 2024

I am writing to inform you about the upcoming Rail Road Safety Week, coordinated by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), which will take place from 18th to 22nd November.

This initiative aims to promote awareness and best practices concerning road safety within the industry.

This year’s theme, “Back to Basics,” encourages a revisiting of the fundamental principles of road safety, ensuring that everyone is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to mitigate risks on the road. It serves as a timely reminder that even the simplest of practices can significantly impact our safety on the job.

Each day during the week it is proposed that briefings will be held to discuss specific road safety topics and share experience in the depots and fleet locations across the business as follows:

  • Managers and supervisors to join HSE advisors and RMT safety reps to be a visible presence in PPE in depots and other fleet locations.
  • Fleet audits, yard walk and talks, ICSS demonstrations and fob checks
  • Refresh ICSS briefings and demonstrations (materials will be provided)
  • Vehicle walkaround checks using the CheckedSafe app.
  • Speeding preventions and back to basics driving conversations.
  • Safe loading demonstrations and conversations
  • Where possible to invite our Supply Chain colleagues to depot locations to partake in conversations.

Aims:

  • To increase the number of safe journeys taken through improved usage of the vehicle pre-use check using CheckedSafe app
  • To improve road risk data and target specific issues as they arise by maximising usage of the ICSS PDA login for every journey
  • To establish a clear understanding around the reasons for using the system, and the agreements in place about how the data is used
  • To engage and inform the workforce and reduce overall road risk, so that everyone gets home safe, every day.

For any queries or suggestions please contact your local safety team.

Please bring this circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely
