Our Ref: HSR/2/2
Head Office Circular: NP/35/20
24th February 2020
To: The Secretary
ALL BRANCHES
ALL REGIONAL COUNCILS
Dear Colleague,
TRANS PENNINE EXPRESS- SECURITY AT CLEETHORPES STATION
South Humberside Branch submitted the following motion to the National Executive:
The members of South Humberside Branch do not feel that Trans Pennine Express are taking the safety and welfare of the public and our members seriously. As has been seen across the country recently, public transport is under attack from the growing problem of anti-social behaviour, particularly at our stations, and Cleethorpes is no exception. Following a spate of abuse, our H&S rep previously requested an increase to full-time security at Cleethorpes Station, but TPE refused to do so. There have been 7 assaults on Cleethorpes Station since our members' request, and 5 physical and verbal assaults in just the last few weeks.
This branch is greatly concerned for the safety of our members and the travelling public, and we feel it is high time TPE faced up to their responsibilities and take this issue seriously before matters take a tragic turn for the worse. To address our concerns, this branch requests that the General Secretary arranges a meeting with TPE management to demand that TPE provide security at Cleethorpes Station at all times staff are booked on duty.
At its meeting on 18th February the NEC noted and adopted the following report from the Health and Safety Sub Committee:
We instruct the General Secretary to:
1. Write to Trans Pennine Express requesting a meeting in the next 7 days.
2. If no adequate response is received members are to be advised of their right to refuse to work on the grounds of health and safety and be fully supported by the union.
3. Write to Trans Pennine Express and the BTP to set up a tripartite meeting to address the situation.
4. Instruct our Parliamentary Group to take up this matter.
5. Produce a press release.
All Branches and Regional Councils to be informed.
I am acting in accordance with these instructions and will keep you informed of developments. Please make the contents of this Circular available to all appropriate members.
Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
