Dear Colleague

TRANSPORT FOR WALES (TfW): DEPOT SHED HEATING & EXTRACTION

I have received a report from your lead officer with an update concerning the latest developments in relation to the above-mentioned matter.

In regard to the installation of a new heating and extraction system at the Canton Maintenance Depot, the continued delays and lack of information have caused a considerable level of consternation amongst our TfW members based at the depot.

A meeting was held with TfW on 15th August 2024 where RMT was advised that following escalation of this issue to director level that Network Rail had confirmed that all outstanding work was due to be completed prior to the Summer 2025.  Further, that a meeting would be held with the contractor assigned to complete the work on 28thAugust 2024 where full details of the schedule would be provided.

Unfortunately, despite several requests for confirmation on this matter, no timetable for works has been forthcoming with TfW citing difficulties with Network Rail as the obstructing factor towards progress in this matter.

At its meeting on 17th December 2024 your NEC resolved as follows:

That we note the updated Report from the Lead Officer and that the situation is now unacceptable to our members, whose health and safety should not be put at risk due to delays and indecision.

Therefore, we instruct the General Secretary to write to Transport for Wales to inform them that a dispute situation now exists between our respective organisations in respect of this matter.

Further, the General Secretary is instructed to prepare an industrial action ballot matrix of our Transport for Wales Fleet Grade members based at Canton Maintenance Depot.

Relevant members, branches and regional council are to be advised by text and email

I am acting in line with these instructions.

Please bring this circular to the attention of relevant members.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch

General Secretary
