Head Office Circular: NP/88/23
16th May 2023
To: The Secretary
ALL BRANCHES
REGIONAL COUNCILS
Dear Colleague,
WEST MIDLANDS TRAINS BODY WORN CAMERAS
West Midlands Trains for some time have been looking to introduce a Body Worn Camera (BWC) Policy.
This has been discussed in detail at the assaults working group, policy & procedure working group and the relevant Company Councils that will be involved in the use of the BWCs.
Your Lead Officer met with the Fleet, Supervisors & Stations and the Senior Conductor Company Councils to go through the document in order to reach an agreed position on the policy.
RMT wrote to the company with a few requested changes to the policy document the majority of which have been agreed.
The use of BWCs is a voluntary one and staff will not be forced to wear the cameras and they cannot be used in non-public areas.
At its meeting on 16th May 2023, your National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved as follows:
That we note the report from our Lead Officer.
We further note that this matter has been discussed with union representatives within affected grades and that the consensus is to accept this policy.
Therefore the General Secretary is instructed to inform the company of our acceptance of this body worn camera policy.
All affected members, Branches and Regional Councils to be informed.
I am acting in line with these instructions. Please bring the contents of this circular to the attention of relevant members.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
