15 March - International Day to Combat Islamophobia

17th February 2025

My ref: EO/23

Circular No. NP/022/25

TO: THE SECRETARY

ALL BRANCHES AND REGIONAL COUNCILS

Dear Colleague,

15TH MARCH – INTERNATIONAL DAY TO COMBAT ISLAMOPHOBIA

Further to Decision 1108, June 2024, I am writing to all Branch and Regional Secretaries to raise awareness around commemorating the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

On 15 March 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus that proclaimed March 15 as 'International Day to Combat Islamophobia'.  The date, March 15, was chosen as it is the anniversary of the New Zealand Christchurch Mosque shootings, in which 51 people were killed during Friday prayer.

The United Nations created this international day of observance for a global dialogue on the promotion of a culture of tolerance and peace, based on respect for human rights and for the diversity of religions and belief.

Please inform our Equal Opportunities Officer, Jess Webb, on j.webb@rmt.org.uk if you are holding an event to commemorate this day.

I would be grateful if this is brought to your members’ attention.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Lynch

General Secretary
