26 NOVEMBER: Network Rail & Subcontractors lobby of Parliament

Monday 17th November 2014

Circular No. National Policy NP/241/14/BO

To the Secretary all Branches,
Council of Executive members,
Regional Councils and Regional Offices.

Dear Colleagues,

26 NOVEMBER: Network Rail & Subcontractors lobby of Parliament

I am writing to remind you about the important lobby of Parliament on 26th November 2014 to oppose the exploitation of workers through the use of umbrella companies, and also to highlight the safety concerns of those working alongside an increasingly casualised contractor workforce.

The day will include a demonstration in Old Palace Yard opposite Parliament starting at 10.45 – 12.00 noon after which we will go into the Houses of Parliament for a lobby and rally at 12.45pm – 2.00pm in Committee Room 14
There will be a photo opportunity at the demonstration in Old Palace Yard at 11.30 am

Speakers at the rally include:
Mick Cash - RMT General Secretary, Steve Murphy - UCATT General Secretary, Gail Cartmail - Unite assistant general secretary, Emma Lewell-Buck MP, Jim Sheridan MP and Steve Rotheram MP (chair)

Participation is a legitimate use of branch expenditure so please speak to your Branch Secretary. There are further events in Edinburgh and Cardiff with details to follow.
This is a joint rally as UCATT and Unite the Union both organise in the construction industry with many of the companies we encounter working on the rail network.

This is an important opportunity to raise our concerns in Parliament and also to show the firms using umbrella companies that the trade union movement is united in opposition to this super exploitation.

I will keep you informed of any developments and I hope to see you on 26th November.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
General Secretary
