Circular No. National Policy NP/30/15/BO
To the Secretary all Branches,
Council of Executive members,
Regional Councils and Regional Offices.
Dear Colleagues,
28 February: STOP PEGIDA Stand up to Racism, Fascism and Islamophobia
You may know that in Newcastle local racists and fascists are intent upon importing the ‘Pegida’ message into the UK and are organising an Islamophobic rally in the city centre on the 28th February 2015.
This is the first time the German Pegida movement has attempted to organise in the UK. RMT believe that such a development will only serve to stir up racism and division, undermine community cohesion and besmirch the name of Newcastle. We believe Pegida must be stopped from spreading their message of racist hate and intolerance and from getting a toe-hold in Newcastle and the UK.
All members are therefore encouraged to attend this peaceful, multicultural and multi faith counter demonstration that will involve people from the widest possible backgrounds. Assemble next to the Gallowgate end entrance to Chinatown at 10am, for a march leaving at 10.30am. The rally will follow at 11am. This will coincide with Pegida's static rally at Bigg Market.
The organisers aim is to send a clear and simple message:
Pegida is not welcome in Newcastle. The people of Newcastle and the north east stand together in unity in the face of Islamphobia, anti-Semitism and all other forms of racism and fascism.
Yours sincerely,
Mick Cash
General Secretary
