August 16th Demonstration to Cut Fares Not Staff

Wednesday 22nd June 2016

Circular No. National Policy NP/173/16/BO

To all Branches and Regional Councils

Dear Colleagues,

August 16th Demonstration to Cut Fares Not Staff

On 16 August the government will use the August RPI inflation figure to calculate another hike in our rail fares from January 2017. Yet again passengers and taxpayers are being asked to pay an ever increasing price for the failures of rail privatisation.

While fares continue to rise, cuts to services and staffing are taking place across the entire network: with more ticket offices closing, guards being removed from trains, driver only operated trains introduced and fewer staff at stations to help when passengers need it.

Everyone is going to be paying more, but getting less.

RMT and Action for Rail are organising a day of action on 16 August to protest against staff cuts and make the case for public ownership. All branches and Regions are asked to organise an action at a station near them and to use the opportunity to highlight our concerns.

The deadline for letting us know about organising an action, ordering action cards and confirming details for delivery is Friday 22nd July.

Please do all you can to build for these important demonstrations and campaigning opportunities.

Thanking you in anticipation

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
General Secretary
