Last week, we officially launched RMT’s new campaign, Better Jobs, Better Services – End Rail Outsourcing . The live broadcast launch event was viewed by more than 1,000 people and can be viewed on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/3SbnCBfmGyA

 

Better Jobs, Better Services is aimed at making the Labour government’s promised ‘biggest wave of insourcing for a generation’ a reality for rail workers. The government has said that it wants to create an integrated publicly owned railway that cuts out wasteful profiteering and interface costs and in which workers are proud to work for GBR and are viewed as an asset, not a cost. We wholeheartedly agree with this vision, but it cannot mean leaving out 10s of thousands of the essential keyworkers who kept the railways going during the Covid crisis. 

 

There are tens of thousands of outsourced or sub-contracted workers on our railway today, including cleaners, gateline workers, revenue protection staff, security guards, catering staff, Infrastructure maintenance and renewals workers and Infrastructure engineers. 

 

Winning the battle to get these workers insourced won’t be simple and it won’t happen overnight, so this is a campaign that’s being built to last but we have to start now. 

 

Here’s what we need branches to do:

1. Write to all your members and ask them to contact their MP using our new campaign tool. It takes just a minute to write to an MP using our simple campaign tool and the letter they write will ask the MP to sign a motion in Parliament supporting the campaign or to write to the Transport Secretary. It’s vital that we get a good volume of these letters going in so please make sure all your members have this link: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/better-jobs-better-services-end-rail-outsourcing.
   
   
2. Help us build our organisation among outsourced and sub-contracted workers by getting this leaflet out into their workplaces and shared on WhatsApp groups and other social media. This is just the start of our campaign, but right now, we want MPs getting hundreds of these letters to get the message across that the government needs to deliver on its promise of the biggest wave of insourcing for a generation‘ and we want the profile of this campaign raised among outsourced and sub-contacted workers.
