Dear colleagues,

Cleaners are Essential - Justice for Cleaners Demonstration – 12pm, 20 July, opposite Old Palace Yard, Houses of Parliament SW1A 2BE

RMT has called a demonstration outside Parliament on 20th July as part of our campaign to end the privatisation of cleaning.

Throughout the pandemic an unrecognised and low paid army of cleaners has gone into work and put their lives on the line to keep our public transport system safe. This army is almost entirely outsourced to private companies and because of this they are low paid, understaffed and overworked.

New RMT research is showing the real cost of outsourcing this essential service. Now we need to put pressure on the industry to act.

The Rail Industry Recovery Group and TfL are conducting reviews of their outsourced cleaning. This gives us an opportunity to win real, lasting changes and build the case for insourcing cleaning. But we can’t leave it to the industry to put its own house in order. We have to win this by building public and political pressure, taking our arguments and our numbers out to the public and to the political establishment.

This demonstration will be a key part of that work. I urge you to come and support your cleaning grade colleagues on 20th July. They need our solidarity and support.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
