DEFEND JOBS, PAY AND CONDITIONS – REBALLOT ONLINE RALLY AND CAMPAIGN MATERIALS

Head Office Circular: NP/223/22

12th October

To: The Secretary

ALL BRANCHES

REGIONAL COUNCILS

Dear colleague,

DEFEND JOBS, PAY AND CONDITIONS – REBALLOT ONLINE RALLY AND CAMPAIGN MATERIALS

As you will now be aware, RMT must re-ballot all members at Network Rail and the DfT managed Train Operating Companies (Chiltern Railways, Cross Country Trains, Greater Anglia, LNER, East Midlands Railway, c2c, Great Western Railway, Northern Trains, South Eastern Railway, South Western Railway, GTR (including Gatwick Express), Transpennine Express, Avanti West Coast, West Midlands Train) as part of our campaign to defend jobs, pay and conditions.

The re-ballot opens on 18th October and closes on Tuesday 15th November. We are re-balloting because the law requires that a new ballot is conducted every six months. In order for the ballot result to be valid, there must be a 50% turnout and at least 40% of all members must vote YES.

Online Rally – Thursday 20th October – 7pm

We are holding an online rally to update members about the re-ballot on Thursday 20th October at 7pm. As with previous events, the rally will be streamed on the RMT’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. More details about how to access the rally will be circulated in advance and you can submit any questions about the re-ballot here. The panel will answer as many questions as possible during the rally and your questions will also be used to produce a FAQ document.

At the rally, you will hear from the General Secretary and Lead Officers about how the negotiations are progressing and why it is so vital that all members VOTE YES in the re-ballot.

Please share details of the rally with all members and reps at your company and ensure as many members as possible join this important meeting.

Campaign materials

We have produced new campaign materials to encourage members to VOTE YES in the re-ballot. This includes a leaflet and stickers, a batch of which is being posted to every rail branch secretary. All rail activists will receive a copy of the leaflet.

In addition, targeted versions of the leaflet for each company in the re-ballot are available from the regional offices. Branch secretaries and reps are strongly encouraged to request a batch of targeted company leaflets from their regional office to distribute to their members.

You can also download electronic copies of every leaflet and a social media logo here. Please share these on social media and electronically with members.

All relevant members will also soon receive a special re-ballot version of RMT news.

Peer to peer texting

Please also be aware that, as with the original ballot, RMT activists will be volunteering to undertake peer-to-peer texting with members during the re-ballot period. This is a GDPR compliant process. Branches and reps should be aware that members may receive contact via this texting service, in addition to other messages sent out regionally or locally.

The dispute is at a crucial stage. It is vital that we get a big YES vote now as this will strengthen the arm of your negotiators. There is also huge public support for your action.

We will soon be producing an updated FAQ document for the re-ballot and this will be circulated as soon as it is available.

If any members do not receive their ballot paper or they need to amend their contact details, they should email ballot@rmt.org.uk

Yours sincerely
