Durham Miners Gala Appeal

Head Office Circular No. NP/087/25

To all Branches and Regional Councils

19th May 2025

Dear Colleagues

Durham Miners Gala Appeal

The Durham Miners Gala is the world's greatest celebration of trade union and community values.

For 154 years the ‘Big Meeting’ has celebrated collectivism, inclusion, internationalism and above all the joy of community. As Trade Unionists it raises our spirits, reinforces our unity and solidarity and it is where the young are welcomed into our trade union family.

Every year, more than 200,000 people march in Britain’s biggest celebration of trade union and community values. Please put this year’s Gala date in your diaries and make every effort to attend with your flags and branch banners

Date: Saturday 12th July 2025

Gala Appeal

Once the costs of the Gala were paid from the wages of Durham miners, but after Thatcher decimated the industry and turned Durham into an industrial desert, the Durham Miners Association (DMA) has relied on the donations of thousands of supporters.

Costs of running the Durham Miners Gala have increased by more than 20% over the last few years so I would like to encourage supportive donations to this year’s Gala

The link to make donations to this year’s gala is: https://www.friendsofdurhamminersgala.org/invest

Please support this important event and I would be grateful if you could bring the content of this circular to the attention of all members in your Branch.

Yours Sincerely

Eddie Dempsey
