TO ALL BRANCHES, REGIONAL OFFICES & REGIONAL COUNCILS

8th June 2018

Dear Colleague,

DURHAM WOMEN’S GALA – SATURDAY 30 JUNE 2018, NOON – 4PM

On Saturday 30 June 2018 the Durham Women’s Gala will take place at Wharton Park, in Durham city next to the railway station, for the first time in decades. The day of speeches, singalongs and banner-waving, which was organised by the Women of County Durham Labour, was first held in the 1920s. At its height, thousands of people attended the women’s gala, with speakers including Barbara Castle, Clement Atlee, Harold Wilson, Jennie Lee and Aneurin Bevan, however it had stopped taking place by the 1980s.

This year, it has been revived to celebrate 100 years since some women were given the vote. Newcastle Rail and Catering Branch have secured a space at the event and will have a special stall highlighting the work our union does for women members. Volunteers are sought to help with this event (contact Branch Secretary, David King N32eb45@rmt.org.uk) All RMT members and their friends and families are welcome to this free community celebration.

Further information on the event can be found at https://womensgala.org Do note this is a separate event to the Durham Miners’ Gala which is held a few weeks later.

I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this circular to the attention of your members.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash
General Secretary
