ETF Seafarers Matter Conference 28 Feb

Circular No: NP/022/17
Our ref: S1/3/6/7
9th February 2017

Dear Colleagues

ETF Seafarers Matter conference, Brussels 28th February 0900-1330

Further to the circular no. NP/286/16 of 13th December 2016, the ETF have issued a programme for conference during European Shipping Week (ESW) entitled Seafarers Matter.

As the programme outlines, the seminar will cover issues such as seafarer employment rights and training. It will be held on Tuesday 28th February at Steigenberger Wiltcher’s Hotel, Brussels from 0900 to 1330. A map with the location of the venue is attached and can be downloaded here:

There will be two roundtable discussions, one on EU employment in the maritime industry and the second on labour rights and training. RMT currently have a seat on the panel for the first discussion but we have asked ETF for this to be transferred to the panel discussion of labour rights and training for seafarers. RMT delegates and ETF affiliated colleagues will be able to contribute from the floor to the discussions on both topics.

The union will circulate a briefing to the delegation and Shipping Branches ahead of the Seafarers Matter conference. This will include an update from the ETF on progress in European maritime policy since the Seafarers Seminar organised by ETF and held in the European Parliament on 21st October 2015.

All ETF-affiliated unions have been invited to mobilise and participate in the conference. Spaces remain available on the RMT delegation, with Shipping Branches invited to nominate one delegate per Branch. The deadline for registering on the RMT delegation has been extended to 5pm Thursday 16th February 2017. It would be appreciated if each Branch could send the name of the attending delegate to by that date. All delegates will need a valid passport in order to attend.

Attendance will involve travelling the day before, 27th February 2017 and the cost, including overnight accommodation and travel, of attending the ETF conference is a legitimate form of Branch expenditure. If you require any assistance, please contact Head Office on 0207 529 8281.

You will be kept informed of all developments ahead of the ETF Seminar and it would be appreciated if you could bring this circular to the attention of all members in your Branch.

Yours sincerely
