Fall in Employment Tribunal claims

Head Office Circular No. NP/131/14/MC

To the Secretary all Branches,

Council of Executive members,

Regional Councils and Regional Offices.

Wednesday 16th July 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Fall in Employment Tribunal claims

The Ministry of Justice has published the quarterly tribunal statistics for January to March 2014. The figures outline the impact of the government attacks on employment tribunals, particularly since the introduction of fees.

There has been a 58.4% decrease in the number of single claims received and a 67.8% drop in the number of multiple cases.

Furthermore, the figures also show:

  • a drop of 85% in the number of unauthorised deductions from wages claims
  • that the mean age of a case at clearance was 146 weeks for January to march 2014, up from 95 weeks for the same period in 2013.

RMT will continue to do all it can to fight to ensure access to justice for our members.

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash

Acting General Secretary
