Head Office Circular No. NP/351/13

To the Secretary all Branches,
Council of Executive members,
Regional Councils and Regional Offices.

Dear Colleagues

James Connolly and the Re-Conquest of Ireland

Please find enclosed a copy of a new book co-sponsored by your Union. Additional copies are available from Head Office priced £10.

This book, James Connolly and The Re-Conquest of Ireland, brings together a collection of previously unseen family papers and writings from Ireland’s greatest modern revolutionary.

Profusely illustrated with original documents and photographs, and with specially commissioned artwork, The Re-Conquest of Ireland explores Connolly’s conception of nationhood, its loss and the continuing quest for social justice.

It reproduces the manuscript of his last major work, together with a range of other documents that shed fresh light upon his re-envisioning of Irish history and culture, the struggle for women’s rights and the fight to achieve an independent and avowedly Socialist Ireland.

Through the building of the trade union movement in Ireland, side-by-side with Jim Larkin; to the Dublin Lock-Out; the outbreak of war and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, James Connolly emerges as a leader of enormous integrity, bravery and vision, whose ‘business’ first and foremost was always revolution.

As you are aware, following the 2013 AGM decision, RMT is now affiliated to the Connolly Association and branches are encouraged to do likewise.

Yours sincerely

Bob Crow
General Secretary
