Dear Colleagues

MCA consultation on Manila Amendments to the Standards in Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has announced a consultation on how it intends to implement the amendments agreed by the International Maritime Organisation in Manila in 2010 to the STCW Convention.

Through our seat on the Merchant Navy Training Board, the union has worked with MCA to amend seafarer training requirements to comply with the STCW Manila Amendments. This new consultation asks for views on the legislative changes MCA propose to make to enable UK seafarers to receive STCW compliant and internationally recognised certification when they complete their training.
Hard copies are available from Head Office on request and the consultation documents can be downloaded here:

If RMT Shipping Branches and/or seafarers have any points for inclusion in the union’s official response to this consultation, please ensure that they are emailed to d.crimes@rmt.org.uk by 30th October 2014 at the latest.

You will be alerted to any significant outcomes to the MCA’s latest consultation and it would be appreciated if the content of this circular is brought to the attention of members in your Branch.

Yours sincerely
