Merchant Navy Medal nominations 2021

Circular No: NP/0146/21

TO ALL BRANCHES AND REGIONAL COUNCILS.

Our ref: S7/8/21

5th May 2021

Dear Colleagues

Merchant Navy Medal nominations 2021

Further to Circular No. NP/090 of 25th May 2019, following the interruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, I am writing to alert Maritime and all Branches to the opening of the nomination process for the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service.

The majority of these awards go to officers, which downplays the importance of UK Ratings in the merchant navy. You are encouraged to change this by nominating current or retired RMT Ratings for this award. Nominations should be made on behalf of individuals, on a confidential basis and should be accompanied by as many supporting statements as possible.

Copies of the guidance and nomination forms are available online, here.

Twenty medals are awarded each year to recognise outstanding contributions to the maritime industry by merchant seafarers in the UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The minimum period of qualifying merchant navy service is generally twenty years, although exceptions have been made. Merchant seafarers, retired or serving can be nominated.

Nominations and supporting statements for this year’s Merchant Navy Medal should be emailed to MerchantNavyMedal@dft.gov.uk by Friday 31st May.

It would be appreciated if you could bring the content of this circular to the attention of all branch members and you will be updated with further developments.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
