New Living Wage Rates

Circular No. NP/304/13/GB

4th November 2013

TO: ALL BRANCHES, REGIONAL ORGANISERS, REGIONAL COUNCILS, & COUNCIL OF EXECUTIVES.

Dear Colleagues,

New Living Wage rates

New rates for the Living Wage have been announced - as of Monday 4th November they are as follows:

Rate from 4th Nov 2013

Previous rate

% increase

UK

£7.65

£7.45

2.7%

London

£8.80

£8.55

2.9%

On 1st October the adult rate of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) increased by 1.9% to £6.31, while the other rates of the NMW increased by 1.1%. RPI inflation between October 2012 and September 2013 was 3.1%.

It is RMT policy that to help keep all workers out of poverty, the NMW be set at half male median earnings as soon as possible - building towards the eventual goal of two-thirds of male median earnings. (In the year to April 2012 the male full-time median hourly wage was £13.27[1]. Therefore two thirds’ male full-time hourly median wage in the year to April 2012 would have been £8.85).

Yours sincerely,

Bob Crow

General Secretary
