Paying more for less – Day of Action 9th March

Head Office Circular No. NP/51/22

To all Branches and Regional Councils in England

23rd February 2022

Dear Colleagues

Paying more for less – Day of Action 9th March

Next week, rail fares in England are increasing by 3.8%. At the same time, the Government and train companies are looking to cut rail services and thousands of jobs. This will make the railway less safe, secure and accessible and will mean more people will use the car instead – increasing carbon emissions and pollution.

Passengers will be paying more, but getting less.

The NEC has therefore decided to hold a day of action on Wednesday 9th March at stations around England to highlight this message to passengers. We will be asking passengers to use RMT’s model letter to write to their MP to demand fair fares and a properly funded railway that protects rail services, staffing and the climate.

Regional Councils and Branches are invited to hold action at stations in their area.

At the time of writing, action is confirmed at the following stations:

London King’s Cross: 08:30 – 09:30
Birmingham: 07:30 – 09:00
Clapham Junction: 08:00 – 10:00

As more action is confirmed details will be circulated.

Campaign placards and leaflets are being sent to every regional office in England. If Branches wish to hold action at their local station, please email Sophie Ward (s.ward@rmt.org.uk) to request campaign materials be sent to you.

The NEC decision also noted that rail fares in Scotland increased by 3.8% in January 2022, and that a number of actions took place at stations in Scotland to coinscide with the Union’s campaigning against proposals to cut ticket ScotRail ticket offices.

Please do everything you can to support this action and share details with relevant reps and members.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch
General Secretary
