Review of Barriers to Training UK Ratings – PLEASE RESPOND

Circular No: NP/055/23

TO ALL SHIPPING BRANCHES AND REGIONAL COUNCILS

Our ref: S1/2

20th March 2023

Dear Colleagues

Review of Barriers to Training UK Ratings – PLEASE RESPOND

In answer to your union’s arguments for a dramatic increase in the number of UK resident Ratings being trained, last year the Government instructed the Maritime Skills Commission to conduct a review of barriers to ratings training.

We have met the consultants carrying out the study and they now want to hear from RMT seafarers about their experiences of the maritime training system and of working in the industry as a Rating. It is essential for this review to hear directly from RMT members in the shipping industry and I would be grateful if members would put their names forward for one of the following dates:

  • Thursday 30th March, 1000-1100
  • Tuesday 4th April, 1400-1500

To attend one of these confidential online meetings, please register your name and employer with National Policy at d.crimes@rmt.org.uk and a link will be sent to you, along with a background note. The participation of seafarer members from across the shipping industry is strongly encouraged.

I would also like to applaud the 400 RMT members who responded to last year’s RMT Seafarer Training Survey, the responses to which are a central part of the case for removing barriers and increasing Ratings training and jobs in every country of the UK.

I would be grateful if you could bring the content of this circular to the attention of all Shipping Branch members. You will be kept advised of all further developments.

Yours sincerely
