RMT calls for Government support for Hull Trains and Grand Central

Circular No: NP/132/20

To: all RMT Branches, Regional Offices & Regional Councils

01 June 2020

Dear Colleagues

RMT calls for Government support for Hull Trains and Grand Central

Today, I have written to the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, to call for urgent Government intervention to support the open access rail operators Hull Trains and Grand Central during the Covid-19 crisis.

Unlike the franchised Train Operating Companies, neither company has received any emergency Government funding during the Covid-19 crisis and both have suspended all operations and furloughed their staff.

In my letter, and subsequent press release, I have called for Government funding for Hull Trains and Grand Central, equivalent to the packages agreed for the franchised TOCs, to enable both companies to recommence operations to provide transport for key workers and essential travellers and to protect all jobs.

To ensure social distancing, the railway network is running at a significantly reduced capacity, and Government funding would enable both Hull Trains and Grand Central to provide additional services for those who have to travel.

An online petition has been set up, calling for Government support for Hull Trains during this time. Please sign this, and publicise on social media and to your members.

I understand that the current situation is likely to be causing uncertainty for members employed at Hull Trains and Grand Central, but please be assured that the RMT is and will continue to fight to protect the long-term viability of both operators and all jobs.

Please bring the details of this circular to the attention of your members and I will keep you informed of all updates.

Yours Sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
