Dear Colleague,

SAFERWAVES SEAFARER SEXUAL CRIMES SURVEY

Saferwaves, the charity that supports merchant seafarers who have experienced sexual violence, sexual harassment or gender discrimination, have contacted the union regarding a research project they are conducting at the University of Winchester in collaboration with Devon and Cornwall Police (details here.)

The project aims to determine the extent to which UK seafarers, and those who work aboard UK registered vessels, are exposed to rape, sexual assault, stalking and sexual harassment, and similar offences with a view to further developing support systems and reporting processes to aid seafarers who have experienced these sorts of offences.   The project has received ethical approval from the University of Winchester Research Ethics Committee.

Saferwaves are aiming to recruit as many English-speaking individuals who are either UK residents who have worked at sea during the last 5 years, and/or any individual who has worked on any UK vessel within the last 5 years. They are keen to obtain responses from those with and without experience of these types of crime.

The survey is live until 31st December 2023.  Those who complete the survey can enter a draw to win one of fourteen £100 Amazon.co.uk vouchers.
