Head Office Circular No. NP/167/22
To all Branches and Regional Councils
4th August 2022
Dear Colleagues
Save ticket offices – Day of action 23rd August 2022
You will likely have seen recent reports that the Government and rail companies are planning a wholesale attack on ticket offices.
They are trying to pull the wool over our eyes, by saying that ‘no final decisions’ have been made. But we know they are trying to mislead the public and their real intention is to close most, if not all, ticket offices across the network – around 1000. This affects all Train Operating Companies managed by the UK Government.
We also know that the real agenda is to cut station staffing and protect profits. The companies have given no guarantees that staff will still be present at stations under their proposals.
When the train companies submit their final proposals, there will be just three weeks for the public to respond to their consultations. Therefore, we need to act now to protect the long-term future of ticket offices.
We are therefore asking branches to support a day of action on Tuesday 23rdAugust at stations around the country to get the message out to passengers that the future of their ticket office is at risk.
Leaflets and campaign materials will be provided and any branches able to hold a day of action at stations in their area should email their regional office to let them know as soon as possible. Please also advise of times where possible.
Branches are also asked to:
- Sign and share our petition as widely as possible.
- Write to your MP and encourage others to do the same.
I would be grateful if you could bring the content of this circular to the attention of all members in your Branch.
Yours sincerely
Michael Lynch
General Secretary
