Circular No. NP/43/22
To all Branches and Regional Councils
15th February 2022
Dear Colleagues
Seafarer Training Survey 2022
The Union is surveying seafarer members to collect up to date information on training and employment issues affecting you and UK-resident Ratings across the shipping industry. All seafarer members working in the short or deep sea sectors should respond to the survey and encourage all work colleagues to do so.
The Survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/7WQL7RT

After decades of exploitation of foreign seafarers by shipowners and crewing agents, UK residents only hold 13% (c9,000) of all Ratings jobs in the UK shipping industry. The Tonnage Tax has delivered next to nothing for UK Ratings and nearly 100% of the annual £15m Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme funds Officer Cadet training.
Information from this survey of RMT seafarers will strengthen our calls on Government and industry for urgent action to train and employ more UK-resident Ratings. I strongly encourage you and all Ratings to complete this survey.
I would be grateful if you could bring the content of this circular to the attention of all members in your Branch and you will be kept updated with further developments.
Yours sincerely
Mick Lynch
General Secretary
